How Scale Helps Legionella Grow – and How to Prevent It

Scale in water systems, formed by mineral deposits such as calcium and magnesium, can do far more than cause limescale marks or blockages. In the wrong conditions, it can create an ideal environment for Legionella bacteria to multiply, increasing both health risks and system inefficiencies.

How Scale Encourages Legionella Growth

  1. Surface Area for Biofilm Formation
Scale provides a rough, porous surface where biofilms can easily form. These slimy protective layers shield Legionella from external threats and allow the bacteria to thrive and multiply.

  2. Insulation from Temperature Changes
Deposits can insulate water within pipes and equipment, maintaining temperatures between 20–45°C – the optimal range for Legionella proliferation.

  3. Reduced Water Flow
Scale build-up can narrow pipes, block thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs), and restrict flow from taps and showers. Stagnant or slow-moving water significantly increases bacterial growth risks.

  4. Nutrient Trapping
Scale can trap organic matter and nutrients, providing a food source for Legionella.

  5. Reduced Disinfection Efficiency
Mineral deposits can shield bacteria from disinfectants such as chlorine, making control measures far less effective.

  6. Reduced Heating Efficiency
When scale coats heating elements, it reduces heat transfer efficiency. This can prevent hot water systems from reaching safe temperatures, increasing the risk of bacterial contamination and damaging components.

Preventing Scale Build-Up to Control Legionella

Regular maintenance is essential for keeping water systems safe. Key preventive measures include:

  • Water heater descaling and disinfection

  • Outlet and shower head descaling

  • System-wide disinfection programmes

  • Installation of water softeners to minimise mineral deposits at the source

The Disabled Refuge Myth: A Holding Point, Not a Safe Haven

Many UK fire strategies assume you can move a wheelchair user into a stairwell refuge and wait for the fire brigade to carry them out. That’s wrong — and can be unlawful and fatal. A refuge buys minutes, not hours. Here’s who’s responsible for evacuating disabled people, and what compliance requires.
