Legionnaires’ Disease Cluster in London Under Investigation

Latest Update – Friday 20 March 2026

Investigations into the Legionnaires’ disease cluster in London are ongoing, with health authorities continuing to assess a small but unusual increase in cases reported across parts of north-west and south-west London. At this stage, no common source has been identified.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is actively working to trace potential exposure routes by interviewing affected individuals and inspecting water systems, including cooling towers and building plumbing. In parallel, precautionary control measures are now being implemented, with relevant site operators advised to carry out system checks and disinfection where necessary.

Current evidence indicates that the overall risk to the wider public remains low, and there is no indication of person-to-person transmission. Further updates are expected as investigations progress.

Health authorities are currently investigating a cluster of Legionnaires’ disease cases in London, prompting renewed attention on water safety and building maintenance across the capital.

According to reports, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is examining a number of cases linked to areas of north and south-west London. Specialists are working to determine whether the infections share a common source and to identify where the bacteria may have originated.

At this stage, officials say the risk to the wider public remains low, but investigations are ongoing to ensure the source is identified and any potential risk is addressed quickly.

What Is Legionnaires’ Disease?

Legionnaires’ disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. People become infected when they inhale tiny droplets of water containing the bacteria.

These contaminated droplets can originate from a range of sources, including:

  • Building water systems

  • Cooling towers

  • Showers and taps

  • Hot tubs or spa pools

Legionella bacteria naturally exist in water but can multiply rapidly in poorly maintained or stagnant water systems, particularly in large buildings.

Symptoms of Legionnaires’ Disease

Early symptoms can resemble flu and typically appear within several days of exposure. Common signs include:

  • Fever and chills

  • Muscle aches

  • Headaches

  • Dry cough

  • Fatigue

If untreated, the illness can develop into severe pneumonia. Fortunately, Legionnaires’ disease is treatable with antibiotics, especially when diagnosed early.

Importantly, the disease is not usually spread from person to person. Instead, infection occurs through inhaling contaminated water droplets.

Why Water System Maintenance Matters

The current investigation highlights the critical importance of proper water system maintenance and monitoring in commercial buildings.

Large or complex plumbing systems — such as those found in offices, hotels, healthcare facilities, and residential blocks — can create ideal conditions for Legionella bacteria to grow if they are not correctly managed.

Regular inspections, cleaning, temperature control, and risk assessments are essential for preventing bacteria from multiplying within water systems.

In the UK, building owners and duty holders have a legal responsibility to manage the risk of Legionella under health and safety regulations.

How Legionella Risk Assessments Help Prevent Outbreaks

One of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of Legionnaires’ disease is through a professional Legionella risk assessment.

A risk assessment evaluates the water systems within a building to identify potential hazards and determine whether control measures are sufficient. This may include checking:

  • Water storage tanks

  • Pipework and outlets

  • Cooling systems

  • Water temperatures

  • Maintenance and monitoring procedures

By identifying risks early, organisations can implement the necessary controls to protect building occupants and remain compliant with UK health and safety legislation.
